THE PROCESS

1.

Shearing Wool

Begins with shearing wool, collecting camel fur, and cutting goat hair. The fibers are cleaned, sorted by color and length, and blown and combed using the weaving comb to soften and remove any dirt, thorns, or soil.

THE PROCESS

2.

The Washing

The wool is washed multiple times with water, clay, ash, soap, or traditional Sadu powder, then dried on ropes or mats for two or more days.

THE PROCESS

3.

Spinning

Women spin the wool into threads using a spindle (Al Maghzal). Sitting in their tents, they tie the wool to the spindle’s hook, spin it by winding the handle, and pull the fibers tightly into solid threads.

THE PROCESS

4.

Dyeing the Yarn

Dyeing the yarns with vibrant, natural dyes from plants like henna, turmeric, saffron, cactus, and indigo, followed by sun-drying.

THE PROCESS

5.

Weaving

Weaving is done using the Sadu loom, made of palm or jujube wood. One or two women exchange yarns and weave using the Al-Qarn to manipulate threads, tighten them, and maintain consistent tension for strong, uniform fabric.
